Call me obsessive but I've been ... well, obsessing, about the process for the bangles and I think I've got a solution.
It adds a step but makes it much easier to get a neat result.
I covered the bangle with patterned paper and a coat of gel medium. While it was drying I stamped the sentiment in versamark on tissue paper (ah-ha moment right!) and heat embossing with black detail powder. Then I cut around the sentiment and used more gel medium to paste it to the bangle.
